Workshop description:
Pets suffer when left unattended in a car with the windows rolled up on a hot sunny day. The temperature inside a car may reach greater than 40oC above the outside ambient temperature within an hour. By taking action to cool the interior and notifying the owner of impending pet harm, a car equipped with a pet-smart alarm could prevent harm to a pet left inside a hot car.
STEAM/STEM is an exciting and essential part of contemporary school education. In this one-day intensive and engaging STEAM/STEM workshop, participants will work cooperatively in small groups to create a pet car alarm. A major component of the pet car alarm’s development involves coding. Note that teachers with all levels of coding experience are welcome.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will understand what materials and skills are required by teachers and students to complete this investigation. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to look at sample student work and reflections, discuss the outcomes and benefits of the investigation and hear lessons learnt in conducting this investigation.
